Beyond the Comfort Zone: Embracing Lifelong Learning

A casual conversation with my manager recently made me pause and reflect. I realized I hadn’t been investing in myself when it came to formal learning. Sure, I’d been picking up skills here and there as part of my regular work, but I hadn’t taken the time to truly dive into something new or structured. That realization hit me hard, and I knew I needed to change that.

I had two options: I could either deepen my knowledge in an area I was already familiar with or venture into something entirely new. The latter option seemed more appealing, as it offered the chance to discover new interests and expand my professional capabilities.

Over the course of my three-decade-long career in banking and banking technology, I have had the opportunity to work in many areas. However, I had the least exposure to Trade Finance. Rather than focusing on traditional Trade Finance, I decided to learn about Supply Chain Finance, as it is rapidly evolving and transforming how businesses manage cash flows and optimize supply chains.

To ease myself into this new learning journey, I first attempted a few shorter courses. I began with a course on the future of payment technology, which was relevant to my current work. Then, I ventured into unfamiliar territory by completing a couple of introductory courses on AI and Generative AI. Encouraged by these experiences, I enrolled in an in-depth course on Supply Chain Finance offered by the New York Institute of Finance.

I chose this course because it covered key topics such as the introduction to Supply Chain Finance, key success factors, the ecosystem, and the impact of blockchain technology on the industry. Each topic was divided into multiple modules, delivered through a combination of lecture videos, reading materials, assignments, and both graded and ungraded tests.

The course was originally designed for in-person training and wasn't fully optimized for remote learning. Additionally, it hadn't been updated since its first online version. However, since I was new to the topic, these constraints didn't deter me. The content kept me engaged throughout, and I found myself motivated to learn about Supply Chain Finance.

I also challenged myself to complete the course in a third of the recommended time, despite some long days at work. This required discipline and time management, but it was rewarding to see my progress. Today, I am proud to say that I have successfully completed all four topics, and Coursera has certified that I have attained an intermediate level of proficiency in Supply Chain Finance.

Looking forward, I am excited to apply my newly acquired skills in real-world scenarios. I believe that understanding Supply Chain Finance will not only enhance my professional capabilities but also allow me to contribute more effectively to my organization.

If there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to incredible growth—professionally and personally.

 

 

The Blood Worm Moon: A Celestial Spectacle!

As I look up at the night sky, I often find myself in awe of the celestial events that remind us of the vastness and beauty of our universe. Tomorrow night, we have the chance to witness something truly special: the Blood Worm Moon. 

I still remember learning about lunar eclipses in middle school science class. It’s amazing how simple yet fascinating the process is. During a lunar eclipse, the Earth, Sun, and Moon align in a straight line, with our planet positioned between the Sun and the Moon. This alignment blocks the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon, casting it in shadow.

But what makes a lunar eclipse truly breathtaking is the Earth’s atmosphere. As sunlight passes through it, shorter wavelengths of light scatter, while longer wavelengths—like red—make it through, giving the Moon its characteristic reddish hue. This is why we often refer to it as a “Blood Moon.”

The term “Worm Moon” comes from the Farmers’ Almanac, which has been around since 1818. It marks the time when earthworms start to emerge from the ground as spring begins. Some Native American cultures also associate this moon with the emergence of beetle larvae from tree bark. The combination of these names creates the intriguing “Blood Worm Moon.”

For those of us in Austin, Texas, we’re lucky to have clear skies and mild temperatures, making it perfect for viewing this incredible event. The total eclipse will begin at 1:26 AM on March 14th and end at 2:31 AM. If you’re an early riser or just willing to stay up late, this is definitely worth it.

This event isn’t just about science; it’s also a celebration of nature’s rhythms and the changing seasons. As we watch the Blood Worm Moon, we’re reminded of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us. கிருஷ்ணாவும் காலச்சுவடும் பின்னே ஞானும்!

நண்பர் டி.எம்,கிருஷ்ணா அவர்களுக்கு சங்கீத கலாநிதி பட்டம் அளிக்கப்பட்ட நிகழ்வில் கலந்து கொள்ள முடிந்தது எனக்குப் பெருமகிழ்ச்சியான அனுபவமாக இருந்தது. அந்நிகழ்வுக்குச் சில நாட்கள் முன்பு அவர் சென்னை மியூசிக் அகாடமியில் செய்த கச்சேரி பற்றி நான் ஒரு பதிவு எழுதியிருந்தேன்.  (பதிவின் சுட்டி - https://elavasam.blogspot.com/2024/12/freedom-to-sing-about-everything.html) 

காலச்சுவடு பதிப்பகம், அவர்களின் பிப்ரவரி 2025 இதழின் தலையங்கமாக இந்தக் கச்சேரி பற்றி எழுதி இருக்கின்றார்கள். அந்தத் தலையங்கத்தில் எனது பதிவையும் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கின்றார்கள். ஆங்கிலத்தில் நான் எழுதியிருந்த பதிவில் இருந்து சில பகுதிகளைத் தமிழாக்கம் செய்து அவர்களின் தலையங்கத்தில் சேர்த்து கொண்டது என் உணர்வுகளுக்கு அங்கீகாரம் என்றே நான் எடுத்துக் கொள்கிறேன். 

 

தமிழ் எழுத்துலகில் பொதுவாக எங்கிருந்து தகவல்களோ அல்லது கருத்துகளோ எடுத்துக் கொள்ளப்பட்டது என்று பட்டியலிடப்படுவது அரிதே. அந்தப் பொதுவழக்கில் இருந்து மாறாக என் பதிவுக்குச் சுட்டி தந்திருக்கும் கால்சுவடு இதழுக்கு என் நன்றி. 

 

தகவலைச் சொல்லி படங்களை அனுப்பிய நண்பர் சரவணன் அவர்களுக்கும் என் நன்றி. 

காருகுறிச்சியைத் தேடி

நண்பன் லலிதாராம் எழுதிய ‘காருகுறிச்சியைத் தேடி' என்ற புத்தகத்தைப் படித்தேன். நடந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் சென்னைப் புத்தகக் காட்சியில் வெளியான புத்தகம் இது, ஏற்கனவே இது குறித்தப் பதிவொன்றினையும், சிறுகதைகள் இரண்டினையும் படித்திருந்ததால் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்க மிகவும் ஆவலாக இருந்தேன். அதிலும் எங்கள் திருநெல்வேலிச் சீமையில் நடந்த கதை என்பதாலும், குறிப்பாக என் ஊரான கல்லிடைக்குறிச்சிக்கும் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தில் ஓர் இடம் இருப்பதாலும் எனக்கு ஒரு தனிப்பட்ட ஈர்ப்பும் இருந்தது.

இது காருகுறிச்சி அருணாச்சலத்தின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறா? சுவையான சில சம்பவங்களின் கோப்பா? புனைவா? இந்தக் கேள்விகளுக்கு விடை இல்லை. இப்படித்தான் என ஒரு வகைக்குள் அடைக்க முடியாத ஒரு புத்தகம் இது. வாழ்க்கைக் குறிப்புகளும் உண்டு, அனுபவப் பகிரல்களும் உண்டு, புனைவுக் கதைகளும் உண்டு, இசை நுட்பங்கள் குறித்த ஆழ்ந்த விளக்கங்களும் உண்டு.  இவ்வளவு ஏன் ராம் கவிதை கூட எழுதி இருக்கிறான்! (ஒருமையில் எழுதுவதற்கு மன்னிக்க. மரியாதை கொடுத்து எழுதினால் எனக்கே செயற்கையாகப் படுகிறது.)

இந்த வகைமைப்படுத்துதல் பற்றிய பிரச்னை எனக்கு மட்டுமில்லை. ராமிற்கும் கூட இருந்திருக்கிறது. “ஒரு கலைஞன் பிறந்து வளர்ந்தது; மிகவும் சிரமப்பட்டு குருமுகமாக கலையில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றது; கலையை அரங்கேற்ற மேடைகள் தேடிப் போராடியது; கிடைத்த மேடைகளில் நன்றாக வாசித்துத் துறையில் முன்னேறியது; தொடர்ந்து பல ஆண்டுகள் வாசித்துப் பல அங்கீகாரங்களைப் பெற்றது; என்ற சித்திரத்தை அனேகமாக எல்லாக் கலைஞருக்கும் பொருத்த முடியும்.” என்று எழுதிய ராம், இந்த மாகலைஞனை பற்றிய சித்திரத்தை நமக்குத் தர இந்த வாடிக்கையான வடிவத்தை விடுத்து ஒரு வித்தியாசமான கோணத்தில் தந்திருக்கும் புத்தகம்தான் ‘காருகுறிச்சியைத் தேடி’.

எடுத்துக் கொண்ட சவாலை முழுமையாக முடிந்ததா என்ற கேள்விக்கு ஒவ்வொருவரின் பதிலும் அவரவரின் அனுபவத்தின் வெளிப்படுத்துதலாகவே இருக்கும். எனக்குப் பிடித்தது. ஒரு நெடும்பயணத்தில் ஒரே முச்சில் படித்து முடித்தேன். முடித்த பின்பு எனக்கு உண்டான உணர்ச்சிகளைப் பதிவு செய்ய, அப்பயணத்திலேயே இந்தப் பதிவையும் எழுதுகிறேன்.

எனக்குப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளத் தோன்றியவை, எனக்குப் பிடித்தவை பற்றிதான் இந்தப் பதிவு இருக்கும். விமர்சனங்களே இல்லையா என்றால் உண்டு. ஆனால் அவை என் புரிதல்கள் மூலம் எழுந்தவை என்பதால் அதை தனியாக ராமிடம் சொல்வதே சரி என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

ஆனால் ஒரு திருநெல்வேலி ஆளுமையைப் பற்றி எழுதும் புத்தகத்திலேயே “திருநெல்வேலிக்காரர்கள் தங்கள் ஊர்ப் பெருமைகளைச் சொல்லும்போது கேசரியில ஒரு பிடி ரவைக்கு ஒரு படி சக்கரை” என்று கிண்டலடித்திருப்பதை மட்டும் வன்முறையாகக் கண்டிக்க வேண்டியது திருநெல்வேலிக்காரனான என் கடமை!

சில நூறு வருட வரலாறே இருக்கும் நாடுகள் கூட அவ்வரலாற்றை முறையாகப் பராமரித்து, அவர்களின் அருங்காட்சிச்சாலைகளில் ஒழுங்குபடுத்தி, அது குறித்து ஆய்வுகள், விளக்கங்கள், காட்சிப்படங்கள் என்றெல்லாம் பிரமாதப்படுத்தும் பொழுது பல ஆயிர வருட வரலாற்றுச் சான்றுகள் நம்மிடையே இருப்பதாலோ என்னவோ வரலாற்றைப் பேணுவது என்பது நமக்குக் கைவராத ஒன்றாகவே இருக்கிறது. ஒன்று, எந்த விதமான தகவல்களுமின்றி ஒரு ஆளுமையை முழுவதாகத் தொலைத்துவிடுவோம். அல்லது அவர் பற்றிய  மிகைக்கதைகளைப் புகுத்தி அவரைத் தெய்வப்பிறவியாக மாற்றிவிடுவோம். ஒருவரின் உண்மையான தோற்றத்தைக் கொண்டு வருவது என்பது இயலாத காரியமாகவே இருக்கிறது.

ஹரிகேசநல்லூரில் முத்தைய்யா பாகவதரின் பஜனை மடத்தின் நிலை பற்றியும், காருகுறிச்சியார் கட்டிய ராஜரத்ன விலாஸ் என்ற வீட்டின் பெயர் தாங்கிய வளைவின் நிலை பற்றியும் ராம் எழுதும் பொழுது மனது வலிக்கத்தான் செய்கிறது. அவ்வளவு ஏன், நம் நாடு சுதந்திரம் பெற்ற அன்று அவர் வாசித்த கச்சேரி குறித்து கூட முறையான தகவல்கள் இல்லை. அதனால்தான் என்னவோ வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு என்ற வடிவத்தை விட்டு புனைக்கதைகளாக சில சம்பவங்களைச் சொல்ல வேண்டிய நிலைக்கு அவன் தள்ளப்பட்டுவிட்டான்.

காருகுறிச்சியார் குறித்து எழுதும் பொழுது ராம் தொடர்ந்து சந்திக்கும் சவால் இதுதான். அவருடன் இணைந்து பயணித்தவர்கள் குறித்த விபரங்களே இல்லாமல் இருப்பது அல்லது இது உண்மையில் நிகழ்ந்த சம்பவமா அல்லது இட்டுக்கட்டப்பட்ட கதையா என இனம்காண முடியாத தவிப்பு என்பது தொடர்ந்து அவன் சந்திக்கும் ஒன்றாக இருக்கிறது. இத்தனைக்கும் காருகுறிச்சியாரின் காலம் ஒன்றும் பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பான ஒன்றில்லை. இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டின் முதற் பாதியில் வாழ்ந்த ஒருவருக்கே இதுதான் நிலை என்பது வருத்தத்துக்குரிய ஒரு விஷயம்தான்.

கிடைக்கும் தகவல்களைத் திரட்டி, ஆவணப்படுத்தி, அவற்றை எளிதாகப் படிக்கக்கூடிய விதத்தில் பகிர்ந்து இருக்கும் ராமின் பணி உண்மையிலேயே பாராட்டத்தக்கது.

“கையிலேயே இருக்கும் விஷயமென்றாலும் நம் கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படுவதற்கென்று ஒரு தருணம் விடிந்தால்தான் உண்டு” என்று ராம் எழுதிருப்பதையும் தாண்டி சமயங்களில் அதைக் காட்ட நல்ல வழிகாட்டி அமைவது என்பதும் அவசியம். இந்தப் புத்தகத்திலேயே வித்வான் டி.ஆர்.எஸ் அவர்கள் வழிகாட்டியதைப் பற்றி ராம் எழுதி இருப்பது இதற்குச் சான்று.

தன் பலகால உழைப்பைச் சாறாகப் பிழிந்து தரும் வழிகாட்டி அமைந்துவிட்டால் கடினமானவற்றைக் கூட எளிதாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும். மற்றொரு உதாரணமாக மதுரை மணி ஐயரின் நூற்றாண்டு விழாவினைச் சிறப்பிக்க ராம் தொகுத்து அளித்து இருக்கும் அனுபவப் பகிர்வுக் காணொளிகளையும் சொல்ல முடியும். ஒரு சிறு குழைவை, ஒரு நொடி மட்டுமே நீடிக்கும் சங்கதியில் இருக்கும் நெளிவு சுளிவை, ஒரு சிறு மௌனத்தைக் கூட எப்படி ரசிக்கலாம் எனச் சொல்லித் தரும் பொழுது கேட்கும் நமக்கு அது பாடமாகத்தான் இருக்கிறது.

அப்படி காருகுறிச்சி அருணாச்சலம் பற்றிய தன் கடினமான உழைப்பின் மூலம் பெற்ற செய்திகளை, கதைகளை, தன் புரிதல்களை இந்தப் புத்தகத்தின் மூலம் ‘ஏற்ற கலங்கள் எதிர்பொங்கி மீதளிப்ப மாற்றாதே பால்சொரியும் வள்ளற்பெரும்பசுக்கள்’ போல நமக்கு ராம் அளித்திருக்கிறான். நம்மால் முடிந்த அளவை எடுத்துக் கொள்வது நம் சாமர்த்தியம்.
