Maths Vaths - Not ANOTHER movie review!

The other day my son was learning to work with negative integers. The concept of negative numbers is a little tricky to grasp for a kid. 

So to explain the concept of a negative number, I took the example of temperature. The benefit of living in a place with 'real' four seasons helped. We started talking about rain and snow. I explained about when water freezes and how it is denoted as 0 degrees and how  the temperature is measured when it goes below 0.

Started plotting some numbers on a number line. That kind of made him understand the concept of negative numbers. (On a different note, bloody Fahrenheit system in use here made my life a bit difficult during this time. I cannot understand why this country cannot adopt metric system.)

Once the concept of negative numbers was established addition and deletion of these numbers became easy. Just a question of pouring warm water over ice or dropping ice into warm water. Easy enough. 

Then came multiplication and division. I gave him the easy solution. Just do the operation with the absolute values. Then just change the sign to negative, if either one of the numbers were negative in the first place. The answer remains positive, if neither is negative or if both are negative. 

That solution worked but since the logic behind that was not understood, this became another formula that he had to remember. Explaining this was not as simple as dropping ice into water. In theory, it is the same but to explain it was not simple. So I changed tactics.

I went to his favorite subject - English. I took four words - Is, Isn't, Good, Bad.

I told him Is and Good are positive and Isn't and Bad are negative. Then I told him to write all possible combinations using these four words. He wrote

• Is Good
• Isn't Good
• Is Bad
• Isn't Bad

I asked him to choose which statements were positive and which statements were negative. He identified, rightly, Is Good and Isn't Bad to be the positive statements. 

Now, it was easy for me to just point out that if there were two positives or two negatives the result is positive, whereas, if just one of the inputs is negative the result is always negative. 

QED! 

I was quite happy that I was able to make him understand Math by using Science and English! And it is funny to watch him murmur to himself this is good, this isnt good when he does his math work!

அப்படி எல்லாம் கஷ்டப்படாமல் எழுத வேண்டிய மேட்டராச்சே. இதுக்குப் போயி அலட்டிக்கலாமா? என்னய்யா இதுன்னு ரெண்டு கேள்வி கேட்கவும்

கலித்துறைப் பாஅது கஷ்டமே இல்லை எளிதெனவே
சலிப்பது இன்றிச் சகலமும் சொல்லி விளக்குகிறீர்
மலிவறு பாக்கள் மழையெனப் பெய்து இணையமெங்கும்

அப்படின்னு சடார்ன்னு ஒரு பாட்டை எடுத்து விட்டாரு. அப்போதான் அப்பாடான்னு கொஞ்சம் நிம்மதி ஆச்சு. 

சரி, அது என்ன கட்டளைக் கலித்துறை கொஞ்சம் வெவரமாத்தான் சொல்லேன்னு கேட்கறவங்களுக்காக இந்தப் பதிவு. இது பத்திப் படிக்கிறதுக்கு முன்னாடி தெரிஞ்சுக்க வேண்டிய மேட்டர் கொஞ்சம் இருக்கு. இந்த மாதிரி மரபுக் கவிதை எதுவானாலும் இது எல்லாம் கொஞ்சம் அடிப்படை மேட்டர். 

அதுல முதலாவது தளை. ஒரு சொல் எந்த மாதிரியான சொல், அதை எப்படிப் பிரிக்க முடியும். எந்த சொல்லுக்குப் பின்னாடி எந்த சொல் வரலாம் அப்படின்னு கொஞ்சம் பொதுப்படையான விதிகள். அதே மாதிரி இந்த மரபுக் கவிதைகள் எல்லாத்துக்குமே ஒரு நல்ல சந்தம் இருக்கும், அதாவது சத்தம் போட்டுப் படிச்சா அது ஒரு தாளத்தில் வர மாதிரி. இது சரியா வரணும்ன்னா எதுகை மோனை பத்திக் கொஞ்சம் தெரிஞ்சுக்கிட்டா நல்லது.

சரி விளம்பர இடைவேளைக்குப் பின்னாடி திரும்ப இன்னிக்குள்ள கட்டளைக்கு வரலாம். தளை, எதுகை, மோனை எல்லாம் ஒரு அளவுக்குத் தெரிஞ்சாச்சு. எனக்கு இப்போ கட்டளைக் கலித்துறை டைப் பா ஒண்ணு எழுதணும்பா. அதுக்கு என்ன ரூல்ஸ்? 

1. மொத்தம் நாலு அடிகள், அதாங்க வரிகள் எழுதணும் 
2. ஒவ்வொரு வரியிலும் அஞ்சு வார்த்தை, சரியாச் சொல்லணும்ன்னா சீர்கள், இருக்கணும்

முதல் சீர் நேரசையா இருந்து தளை எல்லாம் தட்டாம எழுதினா தானா வரிக்குப் பதினாறு எழுத்து வரும். அதே நிரை அசையில் தொடங்கினாப் பதினேழு எழுத்து வரும். சொக்கன் எழுதினது நிரை அசையில் தொடங்குது. முதல் வரி - கலித்துறைப் பாஅது கஷ்டமே இல்லை எளிதெனவே - இதுல பதினேழு எழுத்து இருக்கான்னு பார்க்கலாமா? க லி து றை பா அ து க ட மே இ லை எ ளி தெ ன வே - 17 இருக்கா? அதான் மேட்டர். ஆமாம். இது எண்ணும் போது மெய்யெழுத்துகளைக் கணக்கில் சேர்த்துக்கக் கூடாது. 

ட்விட்டரில் இப்படி எல்லாம் பேசிக்கிட்டு இருந்த பொழுதே அண்ணன் @dagalti அருமையான ஒரு ஐட்டத்தோட களத்தில் இறங்கினார்.

அண்ணன் எவ்வழியோ தம்பி அவ்வழியே என நானும் கவிதைன்னு வந்தாச்சு காதல் இல்லாம எப்படின்னு ஒரு காதல் கவிதை எழுதினேன். 

சிந்திடும் வெண்மணி சிப்பியில் ஆகுமே முத்துகளாய்
அந்தியில் சந்திரன் அற்புதம் செய்யுமே நித்திலமாய்
சந்தினில் வந்து சடுதியில் சென்றிடும் உன்முகமோ
எந்தன் மனத்தினை எப்படி வாட்டுது கண்மணியே

வெண்பாவை ஒரு வழி பண்ணியே தீருவேன் என ஒத்தைக் காலில் நிற்கும் அன்பர் @psankar அவர் பங்குக்கு 

வானுறை தேவரை வெட்கிடச் செய்திடும் வில்லவனே தேனுறை வீணையில் துள்ளிசை பாடிடும் வல்லவனே மானிழைக் கண்ணியை மாசறு பொன்னென காப்பவனே  ஊணினை வாட்டிடும் உன்னதக் காதலன் ராவணனே

அப்படின்னு எழுதி ராவணனை எல்லாம் சபைக்குக் கூப்பிட்டு அமர்க்களம் செய்தார். ஆன்மிகச் செம்மல் @graghavan அவர் பாணியில் 

தாளென் பதும்அமை தோளென் பதுங்கையில் போர்பழகு
வாளென் பதும்வர வாலென் அயர்வினைப் போக்கிடுது
சூர்மா தடிசூலச் சீரின் குளிரொடு பார்விழியின்
தார்மா லைபுணையுந் தேருறை அருள்நிறை பார்கவியே!

இதுல பார்த்தா ‘லைபுணையுந்’ என்ற மூவசை சீர் நடுவில் வந்திருக்கு. இது பெரும்பாலும் தவிர்க்க வேண்டிய ஒன்று. அப்படியே வந்தாலும் தேமாங்காய் அல்லது புளிமாங்காய் பார்முலாவுக்குள்ள இருக்கணும். அப்புறம் இந்த மாதிரி வார்த்தகளை வெட்டாமல் இருப்பதும் நல்லது. கட்டளைக் கலித்துறை மேட்டர் இவ்வளவுதான். கொஞ்சம் முயற்சி செஞ்சா ஈசியாவே எழுதிடலாம்.

ஆனா ஒண்ணு சொல்லிடறேன். வெண்பா எழுதும் போது வர ஒரு spontaneity ஆகடும், அதோட சந்த அழகும் ஆகட்டும் வேற எந்த பாவகையிலும் இல்லை.

ஹேப்பி பர்த்டே பிள்ளையாரே!

விநாயக சதுர்த்தி!

அப்பமும் கொழுக்கட்டையுமாக அமோகமாக கொண்டாட வேண்டிய நாள். சின்னக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு எல்லார் வீடுகளிலும் கைத்தல நிறைகனி அப்பமொடவல் பொரி என சொல்லித் தந்து அதைப் பாடச்சொல்லி படுத்தும் நாள். அதையே வாரியார் பாடக் கேட்டால் அந்தக் குழந்தைக்கும் பாட ஆசை வந்துவிடும். ஆனால் எனக்கு அதைவிட பாலும் தெளிதேனும்தான் பிடிக்கும். காரணம் அது வெண்பா வடிவத்தில் அமைந்தது என்பதைச் சொல்லவும் வேணுமா? (அப்பாடா, சொல்லியாச்சு. எப்படி எல்லாம் செய்ய வேண்டியதா இருக்கு!)

பாலும் தெளிதேனும் பாகும் பருப்புமிவை
நாலும் கலந்துனக்கு நான்தருவேன் - கோலஞ்செய்
துங்கக் கரிமுகத்துத் தூமணியே நீயெனக்குச்

இந்தியாவில் விடுமுறை, விடிந்தது முதல் ட்விட்டர் டைம்லைனில் பிள்ளையாருக்குப் பிறந்த நாள் வாழ்த்து விழுந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. சும்மா இருக்க முடியுமா சோதியில் ஐக்கியம் ஆக வேண்டியதுதான் என நினைத்து ஒரு வெண்பா எழுதினேன். 

அந்தப் பழமோ அவனுக்கே போகட்டும்

வந்த பொரியைநீ வாங்கியே போட்டுக்கோ

மந்தமென் புத்திதான் மன்னித்து நீயருள்

தொந்தி கணபதியே கா!

நல்ல நாளும் அதுவுமா அண்ணன் தம்பி சண்டையைத் தீர்த்து வைக்கலாமே என்ற நல்லெண்ணத்தில் கொஞ்சம் சமரசம் பேசிப் பார்த்தேன். ரெண்டு பேரும் ராசியானா அப்பா அம்மா அண்ணன் தம்பின்னு எல்லாரும் சேர்ந்து ஆசீர்வாதம் பண்ணுவாங்களே!

எழுதினதைப் படிச்சவங்க யாரும் ஏண்டா கணபதியோட கா விடறன்னு கேட்டுடக் கூடாதேன்னு கொஞ்சம் டென்ஷன்தான். இன்னிக்குத்தான் கான்னு சொன்னா சண்டை போட்டுட்டு பேச மாட்டேன்னு போறதுதான் அர்த்தம்ன்னு ஆகிப்போச்சு. தமிழில் கான்னு சொன்னா காப்பாற்று, காவல் செய்ன்னுதான் அர்த்தம். கொஞ்சம் அப்படி இப்படிப் பார்த்தோம்னா எதிர்பார்த்து இருன்னு கூடச் சொல்லலாம்.

நான் மந்தம்ன்னு சொல்லிட்டதுனால என்னைக் காப்பாற்றுன்னு கேட்கறதாவும் வெச்சுக்கலாம். இல்லை, நான் மந்தம்ப்பா, மெதுவாத்தான் வருவேன். என்னை எதிர்ப்பார்த்து கொஞ்சம் வெயிட் பண்ணு. போயிடாதேன்னும் சொல்லலாம். ’வெயிட்’ பண்ண பிள்ளையாரை விட்டா யாரு இருக்கா! 

சச்சின், மடோனாவுக்கு எல்லாம் பத்து வெண்பா எழுதினேன். பெருவுருவம் பிள்ளையார். அவருக்கு ஒரே ஒரு வெண்பா தந்தால் போதுமா? அது ’யானை’ப் பசிக்கு சோளப்பொரி மாதிரி ஆயிடுமேன்னு நினைச்சு, போட்ட வெண்பாவுக்குத் துணையா இன்னும் பத்து வெண்பா எழுதினேன்.

பிடித்துவைத்த பிள்ளையைப் பார்

கடைசி ரெண்டு வெண்பாவிலும் கடைசி அசை வெண்பா இலக்கணத்தை மீறி இருக்கு. ஆனா அந்த சந்த சுகம் வேற என்ன போட்டாலும் வரலை. அதனால நம்ம பிள்ளையார்தானேன்னு அப்படியே போட்டுட்டேன். பிழை பொறுப்பான் பிள்ளையாரவன்.

Blessed!

Today, I wanted to hear a few songs in the Ragam Nattaikurinji, especially to make my kids get an idea of the ragam. So started off with the varnam Chalamela. The second was Jagadeesa by MDR, a song I do not hear being performed a lot these days. Then I moved on to a couple of popular songs like Ekkalathilum Unnai Maravene, Pahi Janani.  I also heard a Lalgudi composition that goes Kandan Seyal for the first time and finally ended up with my favorite composer, Dikshithar's composition, Budhamasrayami. 

Heard a few versions of this song, sung by different artists, including the inimitable Madurai Mani Iyer. I, then, discovered a version by Kallidaikuruchi V. Ramalinga Bhagavathar, a disciple of Sangeeta Kalanidhi Kallidaikuruchi Vedanta Bhagavathar. Knowing that his lineage has a direct connection to Dikshithar himself and that Vedanta Bhagavathar was from the street where I grew up, although I never cared for that when I was there, made me listen to this rendering with a special feeling. 

After the Nattaikurinji, I heard the Abhogi raga song Sri Lakshmi Varaham which was composed praising Lakshmi Varaha Swamy of Kallidaikurichi. The one other recording that was available of Ramalinga Bhagavathar, was one more Navagraha Krithi - the Surutti composition Angarakam.

After listening to these songs a couple of times, I had to go out. But somewhere in my subconscious mind, I was thinking that it has been a while since I had listened to Suryamurte or Divakaratanujam, songs from the Navagraha Krithi list. I was also thinking that I do not have an album of the Navagraha Krithis and I should try and obtain one sung by one of my favorite artists. 

After I came home and switched on the radio and an artiste,alas I dont know her name, was just finishing singing Saurashtram ragam and started Suryamurte. The album that was broadcast contained all the nine songs that form the Navagraha Krithis set composed by Dikshithar. And I had a rather nice time listening to these gems and the experience could have been better only if the rendering had been by someone outstanding such as TMK  or Vijay Siva or Sanjay. 

I know it was just a coincidence, but to have the subconscious desire fulfilled so quickly and to have heard someone from the lineage of the great man sing a couple of songs made me feel really blessed today. I only wish more of my desires get answered so soon. (Now, that is the first one that needs to be fulfilled!)

Tablet - மாத்திரை குளிகை என்னும் மாயை தவிர்ப்போம்

#எல்லாமேதமிழ்தான் சீரிஸ்

இன்றைய சொல் Tablet. இதனைத் தமிழ்ப்படுத்தக் கிளம்பி இருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த ஆங்கிலச் சொல்லிற்குப் பலவிதமான பொருள் உண்டு என்பதை மறந்து மாத்திரை என்ற பொருளை மட்டும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு டேப்லட் என்றால் மாத்திரை என்கிறார்கள். சிலர் இதனை இன்னும் சிறப்பாக மொழிபெயர்ப்பதாக எண்ணி குளிகை என்றும் புழங்கத் தொடங்கி இருக்கிறார்கள். இது Waterfall என்பதை நீர்வீழ்ச்சி என மொழிபெயர்க்கும் கொடுமைக்கு ஒப்பானதாகவே கருத வேண்டும்.

இது ஒரு விபரீதமான வழக்கம். இதை தொடர விடாமல் தவிர்க்க வேண்டியது தமிழ்பால் அன்பு கொண்ட பண்டிதர் இல்லாதவர்களின் கடமை. ஒரு சொல்லின் வேர் வரை சென்று பார்த்தால் ஒழிய அதை சரியாக மொழிபெயர்க்க முடியாது. அனைத்து மொழிகளுமே தமிழில் இருந்துதான் வந்தது என்பதை மறக்காமல் இருந்தால் இது குறித்து எந்த குழப்பமும் இன்றி இருக்க முடியும்.

Tablet என்ற சொல்லின் மூலமே தமிழ்தான் என்பதை நாம் அறிந்து கொண்டோமானால் அச்சொல்லை அப்படியே தமிழில் கையாள்வதில் நமக்கு எந்தவிதமான தயக்கமும் ஏற்படப் போவதில்லை.

டேப்லட் என்ற சொல்லின் மூலம் இரண்டு தமிழ்ச் சொற்களில் இருக்கிறது. முதலில் இந்த டேப்லெட்டுகளில் தொடுதிரைகள் உள்ளன. கைவிரல் கொண்டு நம்மால் இந்த திரைகளில் உள்ளிட முடியும். அப்படிச் செய்யும் பொழுது பல நேரங்களில் விரல் கொண்டு தேய்க்கின்றோம். எனவே தேய்ப்பது / தேய்த்தல் என்பது முதல் வேர்.

நம் மனதிற்குப் பிடித்தமானவையை இனிப்பாக கருதுவது பண்டை தமிழர் இயல்பு. இதன் நீட்டலாகவே இன்றும் லட்டு அல்வா என்ற சொற்களை இனிப்பு மட்டுமல்லாத பொருளில் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். குழந்தைகளைக் கொஞ்சும் பொழுது கூட லட்டு என்று நாம் இனிப்பின் பெயரைக் கொண்டு கொஞ்சுவதை கருத்தில் கொள்ள வேண்டும். மாணவர்கள் எளிதான கேள்விகளை லட்டு என்று சொல்லிக் கேட்டும் இருக்கிறோம்.

கண்ணா, இன்னும் ஒரு லட்டு தின்ன ஆசையா என்ற விளம்பரம் பெரும் பிரபலம் அடைந்ததற்கு இதுவே காரணம். லட்டு என்பது கூட இலட்டுகம் என்ற சொல்லில் இருந்து வந்தது. இந்த இலட்டுகம் என்பது நமக்கு தேவையான இரண்டாவது சொல்.

டேப்லட் என்பது எப்பொழுதும் நம்முடனே இருப்பது. வாங்கும் பொழுதும் சரி பாவிக்கும் பொழுதும் சரி. நமக்கு இன்பத்தினை அளிப்பது டேப்லட். இவை தொடுதிரை கொண்டு இருப்பது நாம் அறிந்ததே. அத்திரைகளில் நாம் விரல் கொண்டு தேய்ப்பதும் எப்பொழுதும் செய்வதே.

தேய்ப்பு + இலட்டுகம் என்ற இந்த இரு சொற்களும் சேரும் பொழுது தேய்ப்பிலட்டுகம் என்று புணரும். இது காலப்போக்கில் தேய்ப்பிலட்டு, டேப்பிலட்டு என்றாகி இன்று டேப்லட் என வழங்கப்படுகிறது. அதாவது தேய்ப்பு + இலட்டுகம் = தேய்ப்பிலட்டுகம் -> தேய்ப்பிலட்டு -> டேப்பிலட்டு -> டேப்லட். 

தொடுதிரை கொண்ட பலகைக்கணினிகளை நாம் டேப்லட் என்று அழைப்பது தமிழினை வேர்ச்சொல்லாகக் கொண்ட ஒரு சொல்தான். எனவே இதனை மாத்திரை என்றும் குளிகை என்றும் தவறாக மொழிபெயர்க்காது டேப்லட் என்றே வழங்குவோம்.

எல்லாமே தமிழ்தான் என்ற நம் கூற்றுக்கு இது மற்றுமொரு சான்றே.

குன்றுக்களின் சிறப்புக்கள் - கவுண்டர் டெவில் ஷோ

”டேய் தேங்கா மண்டையா, என்னடா என்னமோ கார்டைக் கையில் வெச்சுக்கிட்டு உத்து உத்து பார்த்துக்கிட்டு இருக்க, என்ன மேட்டரு?” 

“அண்ணே, நேத்து பள்ளியூடத்தில குடுத்தாங்கண்ணே. இதைப் படிச்சா க்கு போட கத்துக்கலாமாம்.” 

“டேய் நீயே ஒரு மக்குப் பய, உனக்கு க்கு போட கத்துக் குடுக்கறாங்களாக்கும். கொண்டு வாடா அத இங்க. எதுக்குடா இந்தக் கார்டு?” 

“அண்ணே, இந்த ரூல்ஸ்படி எழுதினா ஒண்ணுக்கு மேல வந்தா க்கு போட்டு எழுதணுமா வேண்டாமான்னு முடிவு பண்ணிடலாமாம்.” 

“ Single Letter - மிகும். பூக்கள் மாக்கள். ஏண்டா இதுவாடா ரூலு?” 

“ஆமாண்ணே, எடுத்துக்காட்டு பாருங்க ஒண்ணா இருந்தா பூ. அதுக்கு மேல போனா பூக்கள்” 

“ஏண்டா உனக்கு வாயுல பூவே ஒழுங்கா வராது புய்ப்பம்ன்னு சொல்லிக்கிட்டு திரிஞ்சவந்தானே நீயி. இதுல எதுக்குடா இம்புட்டு வெளக்கம். சரி பூவுக்கு பூக்கள் சரி, அப்போ கைக்கு என்னடா? கைக்களா? அதுவும் ஒத்த எழுத்துதானேடா? கைக்கள், பைக்கள் இதுவாடா தமிளு? ” 

”அண்ணே, இதுக்குத்தாண்ணே உங்களை பள்ளியூடம் பக்கத்துல கூடப் பார்க்கக் கூடாதுன்னு பஞ்சாயத்து தீர்ப்பு போட்டிருச்சு. இப்படிக் கேள்வி கேட்டே வாத்தியாருங்களை எல்லாம் வம்புக்கு இழுத்தா எப்படி?” 

“சரிடா, போட்டும். ஒர் எழுத்து ஆச்சு, அடுத்தது ரெண்டு எழுத்துக்கு என்னடா ரூலு?” 

“2 letter குறில் வந்தா மிகும். நெடில் வந்தா மிகாதுண்ணே” 

“2 letterஆ? நல்ல வேளை இங்க்லீசுக்கு ரூல் எழுதினவன் கண்ணுல படலை. நாண்டுக்கிட்டுப் போயிருப்பான். அது என்னடா குறிலு, நெடிலு?” 

“ பசுக்கள் இங்க க்கு வரும்ணே. மாடுகள் இங்க வராதுண்ணே. அதைத்தான் சொல்லிக் குடுத்தாங்க.” 

“பசுக்கு வரும் மாட்டுக்கு வராதுன்னா அது என்ன பாலாடா? சரிடா. தேனீ கூட்டமா வந்தா அது தேனீக்களா? தேனீகளாடா? தேஏஏஏஏஏனீ - இது நெடில் இல்லையாக்கும்? அப்போ ஏண்டா தேனீக்கள்?”

“அண்ணே, வெறும் கார்டை பார்த்தாப் போதுமா? நாலு மணி நேரம் க்ளாஸில் உட்கார வேண்டாமா? ரெண்டு எழுத்துக்கு மேல இருக்கிற ரூல் எல்லாம் உ-ன்னு முடியறதுக்கு மட்டும்தாண்ணே” 

“கார்டைப் படிச்சாப் போதும்ன்ன, இப்போ என்னாமோ பாடம் நடத்துனா கூட இருந்து கேட்கணும்ன்னு ரூல் போடற. ஒண்ணு சொன்னா உனக்கு ஒழுங்காச் சொல்லத் தெரியாதாடா மாங்கா மண்டையா. சரி அதை விடு. அடுத்தது என்னடா?”

“நல்ல வேளைண்ணே மூணு, அதுக்கு மேல போனா எல்லாம் ஒரே ரூல்தாண்ணே. புள்ளி வெச்சா க்கு வரலாமாம். இல்லைன்னா கூடாதாம்.” 

“ எச்சூஸ் மி, அது என்ன இவ்வளவு நேரம் வரணும். கூடாதுன்னு வெட்டு ஒண்ணு துண்டு ரெண்டாப் பேசிட்டு. இப்போ மட்டும் வரலாமாஆஆஆஆம்ன்னு இழுப்பு? அப்போ அவன் அவன் எனக்கு வரலாம் உனக்கு வரக்கூடாதுன்னு எப்புடி வேணா எழுதலாமா ஆபீசர்? அதான் மொழி வளர்ப்பா ஆபீசர்?”

“அண்ணே, என்ன அண்ணே இது, என்னைப் போயி ஆபிசர்ன்னுக்கிட்டு. ஹிஹி வெட்கமா இருக்கு.” 

“ டேய் மொன்னத் தலையா நீ கெட்ட கேட்டுக்கு உக்காத்தி வெச்சுப் பேசறதே பெரிய விஷயம். நாம எல்லாம் மருதமலை பக்கத்துல மாடு மேய்க்கறோம். இங்க வரவனுங்க எல்லாம் குன்று இருக்கும் இடம் எல்லாம் குமரன் இருக்கும் இடம்ன்னு சொல்லிட்டுப் போறானுங்க. அங்க ஆரம்பிக்கலாம். ஒண்ணா இருந்தாக் குன்று, அதுவே ரெண்டா இருந்தா உன்னோட ரூல்படி குன்றுக்களா?” 

“அதான் போடலாமுன்னு சொல்லிட்டாங்களே. இனிமே நீங்க போடறதுதாண்ணே.” 

“அட்டென்சன் ஆல் ஆபிசர்ஸ் இனிமே குன்றுக்கள், அம்புக்கள், வம்புக்கள். தும்புக்கள் சொம்புக்கள் இப்படித்தான் எல்லாரும் எழுதணும். எவனாவது வந்து தப்பு சொல்லிட்டா உடனே கார்டைக் காட்டி அவன் சீட்டைக் கிழிச்சு அனுப்பணும். திஸ் இஸ் கவர்னமெண்ட்டு அனௌன்ஸ்மெண்ட்.” 

“ அண்ணே, ஒரு ரூல் போட்டு ஒரே நாள்ல தமிளுக்கு இவ்வளவு புது வார்த்தை வாங்கி தந்து இருக்கீங்கண்ணே. உங்களுக்கு க்-தமிழ் அறிஞ்சருன்னு பட்டம் குடுத்தே ஆவணும்ண்ணே! ஆனாலும் அறிவுண்ணே உங்களுக்கு” 

“ஏண்டா இப்போதான் வேலையையே ஆரம்பிச்சு இருக்கேன். அதுக்குள்ள பட்டம் குடுத்து படுக்க வைக்கப் பார்க்கறியா? இந்த கேம் எல்லாம் என் கிட்ட வேண்டாம். எனக்கு மட்டும்ன்னா அறிவு. உன்னையும் சேர்த்தா அறிவுக்கள்ன்னுவியாடா? பேசாம உட்காந்து கேளு.

மூணு எழுத்து ஆச்சா நாலு எழுத்துக்கு வா. ஏண்டா காப்பிக்கொட்டை தலயா, நான் என்னமோ பேசிக்கிட்டு இருக்கேன், கரும்புத் தோட்டத்துக்குள்ள என்னடா வேல. அடேய் கரும்பையே எடுத்துக்கோ. ஒண்ணா இருந்தாக் கரும்பு. மேல போனா கரும்புக்கள். அதானேடா ரூலு? வெச்சுக்கோ கரும்புக்கள் அரும்புக்கள் இரும்புக்கள் - இப்படி எளுதினாத்தாண்டா தமிளு!”

“ சூப்பர்ண்ணே.” 

“டேய். வரப்பு மேல குத்த வெச்சுக்கிட்டு இருந்தோமா, போனோமான்னு இரு. அங்க போயும் சூப்பர், இங்க வந்து சூப்பர்ன்னு இருந்த மண்டைய ஒடச்சு ரத்தம் பார்க்காம விட மாட்டேன். வரப்பா? ஓக்கே அடுத்த லிஸ்ட்டு எளுதிக்கோ - வரப்புக்கள் தரப்புக்கள் பிறப்புக்கள் இறப்புக்கள். சிறப்புக்கள்” 

“அண்ணே சிறப்புக்கள்ன்னா என்ன அண்ணே? டாஸ்மாக்ல காந்தி பொறந்த நாளுக்கு ஸ்பெசலாப் போடப் போறாங்களா?” 

”டேய் நீயா நாக்கத் தொங்கப் போட்டுக்கிட்டு சிறப்பு க் கள்ன்னு இழுத்துட்டு எந்தக் கடை சரக்குக்குன்னு கேட்டா மவனே உனக்கு சங்குதான். உடனே சங்குக்கள்ன்னு திரும்ப மூணு எழுத்துக்குப் போவாதே. போடா வெண்ரு” 

“நான் மட்டும்ன்னா வெண்ரூ நீங்களும் சேர்ந்தா வெண்ரூக்களாண்ணே?” 

“டேய்ய்ய்ய்ய்ய்ய்ய்ய்” 

 

டிஸ்கி 1: வெட்டிப்பயலின் கவுண்டர் டெவில் ஷோ பார்த்து இந்தப் பூனை போட்டுக் கொண்ட சூடு. அவர் மன்னிப்பாராக.

டிஸ்கி 2: வாடா போடாக்களும் (க் வரும்தானே?) நாயே பேயேக்களும் கவுண்டர் மொழியினால் வந்தவை. யாரையும் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் தாக்குவதற்கு இல்லை.

Why Subhash Jayaraman should stop writing about cricket!

I am rebutting to this article now, after the hapless MI have been completely blown away by Dhoni and company. But even if I had written this before the match, my response would not have been very different. Mr. Jayaraman might be a genuine fan of MI. If that was the case, he should have done more to bring out the positive elements of the team he supports. But his putting down of CSK really irked me to no limits and that prompted me to come out with this response.

Let us start with the first paragraph.

Observation	Mumbai Indians	Chennai Super Kings
A power packed batting line up;	Tendulkar, Smith, Rohit Sharma, Karthik, Franklin, Rayudu, Pollard Tendulkar has had starts but no real big innings. Smith had one good outing and those three balls against Hilfenhaus.  Sharma has been off and on but has scored over 400 runs. Karthik – a form better left unsaid.  Rayudu has done little in cruch games.Franklin and Pollard have done nothing.  So except Sachin, Rohit Sharma and may be Smith based on the last game, there is hardly any power in this batting line up. And how many opening pairs were tried during the season? How many players  were used during the season?	Hussey, Vijay, Raina, Badri, Dhoni, Jadeja, Bravo, Morkel Mr. Cricket has always delivered.  Vijay has not done much but has shown more form after Hussey joined him at the top. Raina has had his starts but not converted those. Badri has been the sheet anchor. Dhoni showed how to win games.  Jadeja has not done anything of significance excepting one match. Bravo and Morkel have shown what effective finishing means. So with Hussey, Raina (even though not in his best form), Badri, Dhoni, Bravo and Morkel –  Chennai team packs more power than Mumbai. The team was hardly tampered with and was perhaps the most settled amongst all teams. Incidentally George Bailey, the T20 captain of Team Australia has not managed to break into the playing XI.
an all-time legend whose game can adjust to to any format;	Sachin has never showed the kind of form he has shown in ODIs and Tests, in T20s. And particularly this season he has been mostly a sheet anchor.	Dhoni has come down the order and proved himself in a couple of crunch games with his big hitting. And he has inspired his team to some real good wins.
batsmen that can launch the cricket ball into the stratosphere with a flick of the wrist;	And, if I may ask, who are these batsmen? Smith? Pollard? How many games have they done this?	Dhoni, Bravo and Morkel have shown consistently that they are much better finishers than anyone else in this format. (Since I am staying away from this eliminator game, I am not talking about the flick of the wrist helicopter six of Dhoni)
a superstar specialist bowler who can crush the batsman’s toes at will;	Granted. Malinga has done more damage, especially at death, than any other bowler by taking wickets and by bowling economically. Although heart of hearts, I hate his bowling action to put it mildly.	Ben is the fastest bowler but he has not distinguished himself at death. I would rather have him bowl all four of his overs early in the innings.
a young batsman who can finish off the job;	Same as point 3	I would not say young man but as I said earlier there are three accomplished finishers in this side.
a classy spinner	Is that Harbhajan that is being talked about? 6 wickets in 16 matches and an economy rate of 7.11 with a self confidence that would not let him bowl when runs are scored.	Ashwin, who replaced him in the Indian team, has 10 wickets from 16 matches but his economy rate is 6.32 only bettered by Narine and Malinga amongst bowlers who have bowled over 50 overs.
Really, there is so much to like about the Mumbai Indians team. On form and on ability, they should roll over the Chennai Super Kings quite easily	Really?	Really!

Let us now move on to the next paragraph.

“Sure, Mumbai’s captain is at best, a nut case. He isn’t really pulling his weight as a bowler or as a captain. But to think, Mumbai have actually finished third in the season with 10 wins in spite of having Harbhajan Singh as their skipper is a huge credit to them.”

Oh! Wow! A classy spinner is suddenly trashed, accepted as someone who is not pulling his weight as a bowler. Now, I don’t need to say anything about this paragraph excepting that CSK are captained by one MS Dhoni. Period.

Let us now go down a few lines into this article before we get to this gem – “Chennai lost their last league match against Kings XI Punjab and were dead and buried, for all the money in the world, and were at the mercy of results going their way. If there was someone who could have predicted the results to turn out the way they did, should immediately buy a lottery ticket, cash in and be on vacation for the rest of his/her life.”

My understanding of dead and buried is when there is no way out. Now, it is a quirky schedule that made CSK play their last match before anyone else, well, somebody had to. Let us assume that the CSK vs KXIP match was scheduled as the last match of the season and all matches ended up the same way they ended, the equation would be CSK would be in play offs EVEN IF THEY LOST to KXIP as long as their net run rate was better than that of RCB. 

So calling the situation dead and buried and the team came through back door is a very silly observation. CSK had more points and better run rate than three teams which had to win to go better than CSK and they did not. Do not forget that even before that match against KXIP, CSK had to win two matches against table toppers DD and KKR and they did that.

Yes, I did predict this would happen and I did buy lottery but unfortunately winning lottery was not as easy as predicting CSK would get into playoffs. Would Mr.Jayaraman help me be on vacation for the rest of my life?

“Mumbai set a record in their last league game of the tournament. The Rajasthan Royals had a fabulous record in their home ground. They had never lost a game at home in which they scored 160 runs. Mumbai not only knocked the stuffing out of the Royals in breaking that record, they did it in style and with all their 10 wickets in hand. As far as form and preparation goes, in the lead up to playoff, it cannot get any better than that.”

RR were out of the play offs by then. They were truly dead and buried, if I have to borrow  Mr.Jayaraman’s words. What is the motivation level of a team that was already looking forward to finishing this match and going off to whatever each player had to do next? If flogging dead horses is what preparation is, yes, MI was terrific at that.

“Chennai struggled in that match against Kings XI in Dharamsala. The top order faltered against a decent bowling attack. The middle order pushed and poked its way to a competitive total, which as it turned out, wasn’t very competitive at all. Adam Gilchrist showed to everyone how limited the Chennai bowling attack is. A man, on the verge of retirement, coming back in to the team after having sat on the bench for basically the entire tournament due to injury, pooh-poohed his way to the winning target.”

Wow!! What bombastic statements! Yes. Chennai had a tough match against KXIP as their last engagement. When a man like Gilchirst decides to retire in style, there is no stopping that man. He would have won a game against the best World XI that Mr.Jayaraman can assemble.  But let us look at what MI did in the match before their ‘record breaking’ game against RR. This was the 65^th match of the season – MI vs KKR. After restricting KKR to 140 runs, this power packed batting of MI could not last 20 overs and were all out for 108 runs. And should I remind that this MI team barely managed to win against the KXIP once and lost the other time, both times with Gilchrist not even playing?

“If you were a betting man, you would put your money on Mumbai to face Delhi Daredevilsin Chennai on the 25 May. But then again, given the ease with which KKR won, it’s hard to count them out. Either which way, Chennai don’t figure in our calculations.”

I sincerely hope that Mr.Jayaraman is not a betting man and has not put his money where his mouth was. Anyone who would be writing off a team led by Dhoni, would be doing it at his own peril and the result just proved that. And as an ardent supporter of CSK, my bets are on them reaching the finals this year as well.

தமிழனுக்கே செருக்குடைய குறளைக் காலைதோறும் யாராவது சொல்லக்கேட்டு, நாமும் என்றாவது ஒரு குறளைக் கிறுக்கிடமாட்டோமான்னு ஏங்காவிட்டால் எங்கோ உதைக்கிறதென்று பொருள்.

எங்கள் மண்ணின்மைந்தர் டிராஜேந்தர் ஐயா குவா குவாவென்றுhttp://www.splicd.com/JGUC2vzeEIg/33/40 அழும்போது நமக்கும் அழுகைபீறிட்டு வந்தாலும், இவருக்குள்ளயும் இருந்திருக்குன்னு நாம் பார்க்கவேண்டியது குறள் விளக்கும் ஆர்வத்தைத்தான். இந்த மாதிரி எழுதணும்னு ஆசைமட்டுமிருந்தா என்ன செய்ய? பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் மனப்பாடம் செய்ததோடசரி. தன்னார்வத்தில் சிலர் தட்டித்தட்டிக் கத்துக்கலாம், பலருக்கு யாராவது சொல்லிக்கொடுத்தா நல்லது.

இதற்கு ”எழுத்து, அசை, சீர், தளை, அடி, தொடை”ன்னு தொடைதட்டி நாம பேச ஆரம்பிச்சோம்னா எதிரில் இருப்பவர் நம்மைத் தட்டிவிடவாய்ப்புண்டு. நமக்கு இருக்கிற பொறுமையில், என்னதான் ஆர்வமிருந்தாலும் வெண்பா கற்றலென்பது நம் பொறுமையைச் சோதிக்கக்கூடியதுதான்.

‘மருந்தைத் தேனில் கலந்துகொடு’ன்னு சொல்றது வழக்கம். ஆனால் @elavasam இப்போது பாவிக்கப்படுகிற ‘குவார்ட்டர் சொல்லுமச்சி’க்கு ஏற்றார்போல, குவார்ட்டரையும், சிலபல மச்சிகளையும் சேர்த்தே கொடுக்கிறார். ஒரே சேதியைக் குறைந்தது இரண்டுவகையிலாவது பேசுகிறார், இதன்மூலம் ஏதேனும் ஒன்றிலாவது நமக்கு நெருக்கமாவது உறுதிசெய்யப்படுகிறது.

வெண்பா எழுதும் ஆர்வமிருந்து அறிமுகம் சற்றுமில்லாதவருக்கும், இருந்தும் மறந்தவருக்கும் ஆர்வத்தை ஊட்டும் வகையிலும், சீரான பழக்கம் ஏற்படும் வகையிலும் இந்நூல் எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. காட்டமான வாத்தியாக இருப்பதாலேயே ஒவ்வொரு எடுத்துக்காட்டையும் முதல்முறை அறிமுகப்படுத்தும் அதே பொறுமையுடன் நூல் முழுவதும் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி விளக்கவும் செய்கிறார்.

சச்சினதிகாரம்!

இன்று சச்சின் பிறந்த நாள். எத்தனையோ பேர் அவருக்கு வாழ்த்து சொல்லி  இருப்பார்கள். எல்லா சமூகத் தளங்களிலும் இது பற்றிய செய்திகள் வந்தபடியே இருக்கும். இதுவரை பார்த்ததில் ட்விட்டரில் @dagalti எழுதிய இந்த வெண்பா வாழ்த்து என்னைக் கவர்ந்தது.

I am an Electronaut!

You can describe us as the typical american suburbian family. The one thing that would be missing from the line up would be the dog! But we do have the requisite two cars - one for me and one for the missus. The missus of course has to manage the kids, ferry them from one class to another and to take them to play dates carrying all the myriad stuff the kids seem to need to survive each day. So she has what is popularly known as the soccer mom car - the family van. The kids seem to love the van as well because of the entertainment system and insist on going in the van whenever we have go on a long ride.

And then there is the car that I commute in. Bought before the van, the decision for this car was more to appeal to the typical male driver in me. A 6 cylinder, 3500CC Engine, 270 horse power beauty that would give me 18 miles to a gallon of gas and would take nothing less than the super premium variety. While I would always prefer to going in this car, often that happens when I travel without my family. Rest of the time it gets used for my office commute, a commute of less than five miles that makes all my friends very jealous.

Often I felt guilty to be using such a big car for this purpose and the mileage of the car and the rising gas prices did not help me forget this. So I had started to think of downsizing the car to something that is more suited for the kind of use that I have and going the hybrid way was very appealing too. That would give a much better mileage than the cars that run solely on gasoline. While doing some research on the hybrids, I came across the next generation of these cars - the all electric ones.

There were two cars that caught my attention - Leaf from Nissan and Active E from BMW. Both companies were planning field tests of these new cars. There were lot of similarities in the kind of features they offered. If I need to describe these cars in general- These are small cars that have a limited range before they need to be charged again, need a specialized charger installed at home, are first generation cars running on nascent technology and hence might have teething problems, would cost more than the regular cars.

But when the needs are what I have these electric cars seemed to make sense. I was looking for a second car, that is going to be primarily used for my short office commute and did not need a long range or a huge size. The lower operating costs are an added bonus. And more than anything else, the new technology appealed to the early adopter in me. I was sold on getting an electric car.

Nissan did not choose New Jersey as part of their test markets but BMW did have the Tri State area in their map. But they planned to manufacture just 700 cars for the entire country and there was a multi stage recruitment process for choosing the people who would be leased these vehicles. I applied rather instinctively and was surprised when I made into each round of the recruitment process. Earlier this month, I received an email from BMW that I have been allotted one of these cars. Missus and I went for a test ride and it was a good experience driving the car.

This week I took delivery of this car and to make a cliched statement - it was love at first sight. An all electric engine that makes no noise at all and delivers the kind of performance you would expect out of an ultimate driving machine. Yes, the range is limited to 100 miles but that is sufficient for the daily commute, local trips to the stores and even a trip to NYC and back. Anything more we would take the van.

Charging can be done either by using the special 220V charger (takes about 5 hours for a full charge) or through an additional charger that can just plug into a normal 110V charger (takes 24 hours for a full charge but is good enough for top ups). This week I have been running solely on the 110V charger as my 220V charger is yet to be installed. I was originally supposed to pay for this charger and the installation but figured out that there was one company which gives the charger for free and collects money just for the installation. They had some federal government grant which enables them give the free charger and save me over $1000 in the process. Thank you Obama! In California, the state even reimburses the installation charges apparently. Hey Christie, are you listening?

Buying a car in the US is not a pleasant exercise. There is rounds and rounds of negotiation with multiple dealers and end of the day you are still left with a feeling that you have paid more than others. But this time around, there was nothing to negotiate and everything was known upfront when I signed up for the program. This being a field trial version, I was spared of making any decisions at all. For example BMW did a ford on the color front and said you can have any color you want as long as it is white! And all add on gadgets were part of the factory shipped version. No negotiations, no difficult choices. Felt wonderful!

The car is filled with new technology and I am still figuring out all that this car has got to offer. BMW has come up with an iPhone app, that allows you to schedule the charging, lock the car remotely and has a very involved integration with google maps. There is also a facility to schedule what is called as preconditioning where you can set the temperature inside the car remotely so that when you get in the car it is set to your preference. Imagine life, when you get into a car that is warm and toasty in winter! (of course, there needs to be a winter unlike what we are having this year!)

Have done just over 100 miles in the last three days and enjoyed every moment of it! And completed the 100 mile mark, just after Sachin reached his 100th international hundred! :)

My TN friends, already tired of the unending power cuts, please don't get mad at me for this post and my NJ friends, if you happen to see a white BMW with the circuit board kind of etchings in front of you, honk! It would most probably be me!!
