When I started listening to Carnatic music, I could not stand the sound of Nagaswaram. I think the loud music, along with other noises in a closed environment such as a marriage hall, kind of put me off. However as I listened to Carnatic music more and more, I was able to appreciate the beauty of this instrument and the nuances that are unique to this instrument. Today, I cannot but stop and listen to a song well played on a Nagaswaram wherever I listen to it.

Though I enjoy it much, I do not have any knowledge about this instrument at all. In fact the confusion starts even with its name - is it Nadhaswaram or Nagaswaram?! Today, I got an opportunity to listen to a lecdem by Mylai Karthikeyan that gave me a very good understanding of this instrument. And if I have to say one line about this lecdem, I would say if you are interested in Carnatic music, you should listen to this lecdem. Karthikeyan is an young and upcoming Nagswaram player who is destined for great glory. Music runs in his blood and you can see that in his infectious enthusiasm.

He starts from the name of the instrument (it is Nagaswaram) and goes on to explain how this instrument evolved, the mythological stories associated with this instrument, its parts, how does it work, what are the conventions that are followed when it is played in temples, the special musical pieces that are played on this instrument such as Alarippu, Mallari etc. He does all this in easy steps so that we do not get lost in the volume of information he is trying to impart.

Wherever possible, he also plays the concept that he is talking about so that we are able to appreciate the concept better. If not for anything else just to listen to his Sahana, Shankarabharanam, Shanmukhapriya, Nattai Kurunji, the various types of Mallari, etc. this lecdem is a must listen. At times, he also sings and he does that so beautifully that if he takes up vocal music, he would give the current crop of vocalists a run for their money.  I simply loved to see how happy he was when he played on the instrument and the enthusiasm that he shows when he talks about some nuances he has made is adorable.

G. Silambarasan, the Thavil player accompanying Karthikeyan, interjected at times and provided his point of view. He explained how the Nagaswaram and Thavil players were always an inseparable team in yesteryears and how it helped the musicians anticipate each other. Today we see this relationship among the leading vocalists and their preferred accompanists. The standard of the concert goes up a notch when the preferred team played together and naturally the vocalists prefer to be partnered with their favorites too. Another important point that Silambarasan talked about was the vanishing type of Thavil playing called ‘Uruttu Chol’ that is played after a ragam is played by the Nagaswaram artist. He played a sample of that as well to demonstrate it.

Carnatic music is full of jargons. So in a typical lecdem, either there is an abundance of it and a common listener feels excluded or the lecture is devoid of them and becomes too diluted. But here Karthikeyan does not shy away from jargons but explains them and often demonstrates what he is talking about so that the listener understands. This helped me for sure as I have not learnt Carnatic music. A special thanks to him for that.

The main reason to have us captivated for more than two hours is his preparation. Often we see a speaker comes to the stage without any preparation and rambles what comes to his mind then, often either about himself or how a legendary musician appreciated the talent of the speaker or comes with the entire speech written and read from it. Both these, lose the interest of the audience very quickly. Karthikeyan had clear notes on what he needed to speak on and referred to them during his speech. But the delivery itself was extempore and so was very natural. Another special thanks here for eschewing the disclaimers made with fake humility that are omnipresent in such lecdems.

As improvements, the audio quality of the recording could have been better. And when he shows some parts of the instrument, close ups of those parts would have helped. May be this could have been a simple powerpoint running behind him on a screen. The organizers can see how best to improve the user experience in future lecdems.

Thanks to Vidwan Rithvik Raja for sharing this video recording.
